Redwork is one of the oldest embroidery styles. Redwork premiered in the 1800s. Back then, the only stable thread colors available to embroiderers were either turkey red or indigo blue. Red was the more popular color, hence the name. Bluework is the same craft, it simply utilizes a different color thread.
