Pyrography means "writing with fire" and involves burning a design onto a surface, usually a natural surface such as wood, leather or gourds. Pyrography on wood is commonly known as wood burning. Pyrography was once known as pokerwork because the hot end of a fireplace poker was often used to etch designs on leather or wood before the availability of modern tools.
