Despite it's name, lampworking has nothing to do with making lamps. It is actually a glasswork technique that got it's name because lampworking was originally done in the flame of an oil lamp, with the artist blowing air into the flame through a pipe to melt and shape glass.

Lampworking, as known as flameworking or torchworking, is done by first melting rods of clear or colored glass in front of a flame, usually a torch, and then the glass is formed by the artist with tools, gravity, and hand movements. The lampwork technique is often used to make beads for beadwork jewelry.
