Punch needle embroidery, or Russian needlepunch, is an embroidery technique that utilizes a special punching needle and embroidery floss or yarn. The thread, floss, or yard is pulled to the surface from behind using the punch needle. The technique is actually more similiar to rug hooking or even needle felting than it is to traditional hand embroidery. Although with needle felting, the thread is pressed into the fiber from the front of the design instead of pulled from the back in loops like rug hooking and punch needle embroidery.

Punchneedle embroidery uses the same type of tool used for Japanese bunka embroidery but the technique differs. Both Japanese bunka embroidery and Russian punchneedle are often refered to as "painting with thread on fabric".
