Home > Embroidery > Crewelwork Crewelwork, also known as crewel embroidery, is a type of free-form embroidery, not counted, that requires the use of an embroidery hoop. The outline design is transferred to a linen twill fabric surface then stitched by hand using a large sharp needle and wool crewel yarn. A variety of embroidery stitches are used to give the design dimension and color. The wool yarn is thicker than regular embroidery thread and gives the finished design a raised look.
