Why Do I Need to Accept Credit Cards?
If you frequent craft shows or sell your crafts on a regular basis, you may already accept credit cards or have at least thought about it. There are many very good reasons to accept credit cards. It could mean the difference between a craft business that flops and one that flourishes!
Did you know?
* According to Visa International, over 93% of all retail transactions are done with credit cards.
* Credit customers spend 2 1/2 times more than customers who pay cash.
* Credit card acceptance creates impulse buying! Credit gives your customers the freedom to spend their money on unplanned purchases.
* Industry research shows that by accepting credit cards, a business' sales volume will generally increase as much as 30% to 100%!
What Is A Merchant Account?
A merchant account is an account with a bank that is a member of the Visa and MasterCard associations allowing you to accept credit cards after your account is set up and "live".
Understanding Your Merchant Provider's Rates and Fees:
Banks and merchant account providers require "transaction fees" from you for accepting credit cards. Typically, these fees are broken down into 3 categories:
a.. Discount Rates:
Typical discount rates range from 2.5% to 5% per total transaction amount. You pay this amount to your merchant account provider for each of your credit card transactions.
b.. Transaction Fees:
Accepting American Express and other services such as Address Verification Service (AVS) may cost you more than a regular transaction.
This is a flat amount that you pay for each transaction. Typical transaction fees range from 30-50 cents per transaction.
c.. Monthly fees:
These are fees charged for other account related services, such as customer service, your monthly statement, network access fees, and minimum monthly fees. Monthly fees usually run from $10 a month and up. This is in addition to your monthly fees for your Credit Card Processing Network. When a bank or agency helps you establish a merchant account they use a separate company called a Credit Card Processing Network to process your transaction.
*NOTE: All the fees and charges are required to be disclosed to you prior to your commitment to any merchant account agreement.
