Selling Your Crafts on Ebay: A Tutorial

Ebay is truly one of the largest Internet portals for buying and selling online. People buy and sell literally millions of items on Ebay every day. This allows sellers to market to millions of potential buyers for as little as 30 cents per item. Have you thought about selling your crafts or other items on Ebay? This article will guide through the step-by-step process and give you some helpful tips.

How Ebay Works:
Items are sold on Ebay either through online auctions or 'Buy it Now' links. It starts when a seller posts an item on Ebay for a certain period of time (3-10 days). Buyers visiting Ebay search or browse for items they may be interested in. If they see something they want, they can either 'Buy it Now' or place a bid on the item. The winner is the person who bids the highest on the item or uses the 'Buy it Now' option when available. The buyer and seller now have a binding contract and they make arrangements for payment and shipping. After the seller receives payment and the buyer receives the item, they leave feedback for each other. The number in parenthesis next to the seller's or buyer's user name is the number of feedback comments that person has. You can click on that number to view comments left by people that merchant has dealt with in the past. Buyers can feel confident when purchasing from sellers with a high positive feedback percentage.

Getting Started:
The first step is to register as an Ebay seller by clicking on the 'SELL' link at the top of any Ebay page. This is free and only takes a few minutes. You will need to provide your bank account information and a credit or debit card in order to become a seller. Your information is kept completely confidential on Ebay's secure servers.

Accepting Online Payments:
You should also sign up for a PayPal account to accept payments from buyers quickly and easily. A PayPal business account allows you to accept credit cards payments without the expense of a merchant account. It's free to sign up for a PayPal account and there are no monthly fees. You just pay low transaction fees of 2.2%-2.9% + 30 cents per transaction. To sign up for a PayPal account, visit: https://www.paypal.com/mrb/pal=259QZQTHL2XJ4

Getting Your Pictures Ready:
Take clear photos of the items you would like to sell on Ebay. If you do not have a digital camera, some film developers, including Walmart, can provide you with pictures on disk or CD. Ebay makes it easy to upload the photos you would like to use when posting items to sell. You just click the 'Browse' button when you get to that portion of the Sell Your Item form, then choose your photo from the disk or CD or choose another photo that is stored on your computer.

Posting Items to Sell:
After registering for an Ebay account and a PayPal account, go to Ebay.com and log in. Click on 'SELL', then the 'Sell Your Item' link. You can sell your item either through an auction or you can set a fixed price for your item. Selling through an online auction is the classic way to sell on Ebay. Visitors bid on your item and you sell to the highest bidder. You pay an insertion fee and, if your item sells, a final value fee. Insertion fees are based on the starting price or reserve price. These fees start at 30 cents. Final value fees are a percentage (5.25% on the first $25.00; 2.75% on the remainder) of your total selling price. If your item does not sell, you do not pay a final value fee.

Ebay's 'Sell Your Item' form makes it easy to post any item for sale on Ebay. This form will guide you through the entire process of posting your item for sale on Ebay.

More Ebay Tips:
Do your research before deciding which Ebay category you would like to post your item in. Look for categories with similar items for sale. Look for 'busy' categories; notice how many bids the items in that category are getting.
