SECTION 4):*~*: First On-line Tapestry Exhibit for American Tapestry Alliance

San Jose, CA - - American Tapestry Alliance’s (ATA) webmaster, Christine Laffer wipes her brow with relief at the successful implementation of ATA’s first on-line tapestry exhibit. Just type in www.americantapestryalliance.com to web browser, get to the ATA home page and click on the link to “Finding Home@tapestry.au/ca”.

Dorothy Clews and Linda Wallace are curators of the exhibition. In their curatorial statement, Clews and Wallace state that the exhibit “explores tapestry as both an art form and artifact…The postcard size tapestries address the void left by the wonders of instant communication, delivered by technology but leave no object…The concept of tapestry woven postcards is the antithesis of electronic communications.”

After visiting the exhibit from her St. Louis, MO home, Linda Rees, author of Nezhnie: Weaver and Innovative Artist, tapestry weaver and editor of the ATA quarterly newsletter said, “The exhibit looks great and is a good addition to the web site.” Alex Friedman, after visiting the exhibit from her home in London, England, stated, “It is the next best way to see these pieces which have had to travel far and now they are on a virtual trip around the world! …… and Mary Lane, artist/art historian visited the exhibit from her studio in Olympia, WA remarked, “It exemplifies grass roots organization, people expressing their lives through tapestry and achievement through cooperation.”

The purpose of the American Tapestry Alliance, a non-profit educational member organization, is to promote an awareness of and appreciation for woven tapestries designed and woven by individual artists world-wide; to co-ordinate exhibitions of tapestries to establish a professional networking system for tapestry designers and weavers throughout the world; to encourage both corporate and private collectors and to educate the public about the history and techniques involved in tapestry making.

This and future on-line exhibitions help fulfill ATA’s mission by making tapestry available to other tapestry designers and weavers and the public world-wide. Please visit the on-line exhibition and see what we mean. ”Finding Home@tapestry.au/ca” will be available on www.americantapestryalliance.com until October 31, 2005.
