I recently found out that there is a secretly hidden letterbox about 4 miles from my mother-in-law's house. She doesn't know anything about it, and, most likely, neither do any of her neighbors. Except maybe the one who hid it...
While doing research for the rubber stamping category at CraftSiteDirectory.com, I came across a web site called Letterboxing North America. I found it quite intriguing. A letterbox is a weatherproof container that contains a unique, usually handmade, rubber stamp and a small notepad. These letterboxes are hidden all over the world by rubber stampers and other letterboxing enthusiasts. At the letterboxing.org web site, or one of the other links mentioned below, you can search by country or region to find clues to locate secret letterboxes in your area or in an area that you plan to visit.
Letterboxing is a great activity for the whole family. It's also great for artists, crafters, and writers who enjoy nature
and like to take some time alone for themselves. Children will enjoy the Sherlock Holmes aspect of it. Parents will enjoy
seeing their children getting outdoors, getting some exercise, especially when schoolwork and homework takes its toll on
them. Rubber stampers, and other artists and crafters will enjoy the artistic aspect of letterboxing.

Interestingly enough, letterboxing actually originated in England, but has spread to North America.
