SECTION 2):*~*: The KatRita Wood Project
A former New Orleans resident leads efforts to turn fallen trees from the US Gulf Coast hurricanes into arts and crafts.

In the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita that devastated the US Gulf Coast during the 2005 hurricane season, efforts to rebuild are still underway. Katrina is estimated to be responsible for $75 billion US dollars in damages, making it the costliest hurricane in the United States history. Hurricane Rita caused another $10 billion dollars in damages.

If you drive through SouthEast Louisiana and Mississippi you will still see many fallen trees from the storms. When realizing that they were being gathered up and destroyed because the twisted trees had been rendered useless for rebuilding, one former New Orleans resident had an idea. Though unsuitable for home construction, these trees could be turned into arts and crafts and sold to raise money for hurricane victims. Amy Canada, who lost her own home during the storms, got the project started.

When asked about the organization's most recent accomplishments Amy Canada stated, "Most excitedly, this week we issued the first check to a community center to help pay for repairs of their facility so that it can be used to house teams of workers from across the country who will then work in the surrounding neighborhoods. This is our purpose." So far, over 100 pieces of artwork have been created and about 70 have been sold.

In addition to volunteer woodcarvers and woodworkers, they are also in need of locations in the New Orleans and Southwest LA areas to store the wood and display the finished pieces along with ways to transport wood to other areas of the country. Financial support is also needed in the form of donations or sponsorship. At this time they are looking for a company willing to sponsor the hiring of a part-time business assistant/coordinator.

There are other ways you can help including purchasing KatRita wood or finished artwork made from the wood. For more information visit http://www.katritawood.org/.
